7th Grade Lab

7th grade spent some time in our Science lab and completed the famous Darwin’s Finches Lab.
They "traveled" to the Galapagos Island and “observed” the different types of beaks that the birds had on the island. How could they eat? Not every beak is suitable for certain foods, so we had to find out which birds would be able to survive on the island and which would be unable to adapt. According to natural selection, the weakest birds (the birds who are unable to adapt to their environment) would become extinct!
We used clothespins, test tube holders, scissors, tweezers, and spoons to mimic the different types of beaks.
For the food they had to eat, we used cotton balls, Q-tips, sunflower seeds, pinto beans, Pennie’s, and tooth picks.
Each student was given 15 seconds to use the “beaks” to place the “food” inside of the petri dish. This would mimic how easy or how hard it would be for that bird to survive on that diet.
They had so much fun and even celebrated when they were able to get all of the “food” inside the Petri dish. It was such a delight to see!
