# Light Unit

We looked at the painting Starry Night by Vincent Van Gogh and then used finger paint and paper to create our own!

Our Finished Masterpieces

# Welcome to Pre-K Unit

We started out our year learning our friends names. We used tiles to help spell our names and our friends names.  We counted how many letters everyone had and then compared the amounts to see who had the most and and who had the least amount of letters.

We also made self portraits! We used mirrors to look at the features we need to add to our art piece. Then we used a variety of items to make each feature.

In our Math center we counted out hearts for Chester raccoon from our story-The Kissing Hand.

We learned all about feelings. We matched certain feelings to situations on cards.  Then we made different feeling faces ourselves. Can you guess which feeling we are showing.

We also created different feeling faces using playdough on head cards.

# Light Unit- February 2020

We studied a painting by Vincent van Gogh- The Starry Night. We then made our own paintings using finger paint! It was so much fun to swirl all the paint!

In the block center we built letters and then made their shadows using a flashlight.

In Dramatic Play we made a camp site. We packed food and items to we would need and we used flashlights to create stars on top of our tent.

At the Science Center we explored light with mirrors, prisms, colored paddles and flashlights. We made rainbows with the prisms and saw how the size changed when we moved the flashlight!

We used the smartboard to make shadow puppets. We even made up our own shadow puppets and told stories with them.

# Transportation Unit

We used the blocks to make bridges and roads for all types of vehicles.

In the ABC center we used cars with Capitol letters and parked them on a mat to match their lower case partner.  We also made trucks by matching capital and lower case.

We used monster trucks in the sand to make tracks and we experimented with objects to see what sinks and what floats.  Then we added bears to boats to see how many it would hold before it sank.

Math Center- we counted wheels on trucks, used tens frames to count cars and shapes to make vehicles.

We used shapes again on the smart board to make vehicles and then used them to create our own vehicle!

The the engineering center we used different building material to create vehicles and we learned about gears and how they move!

Dramatic Play we took turns driving the car and later dressed up as different community helpers.

# Where We Live

In December our Unit of Study was Where We Live.  We learned about our city and how big it is, we also learned more about out neighborhood.  We observed the many types of homes that people and animals live.

In the block center we built a city like NYC and we made zoos for the animals to live.

In the Math center we put together puzzles in number order, counted groups of objects and matched them to their numeral.  We also used cubes as people and counted how many would fit into each of the homes.

We used play-dough and toothpicks to build 3d buildings…this was really challenging.

After reading the story of The 3 little pigs and the not so bad wolf, we re-built there houses to retell the story.  Then we retold the story and tried to blow the houses down!

Our favorite activity was trying to build a tree using green cups. we measured them to see how tall we could build it before it falls.  Dorwens on the last day built the tallest one at 59 1/2 inches!

# My Five Senses

We spent October exploring our environment uses our senses.  We learned about apples, leaves and pumpkins and played games to identify smells and sounds.  We learned about preparing a healthy plate of food using the food groups.

# Getting to Know our Pre-k Classroom

We have spent our past unit learning about ourselves, our friends, our school and our feelings.  We have learned how to navigate through our class during center time and knowing the flow of our day.  We are becoming more independent and most of us can make our own cots and serve our food at meals.

# Plant Unit

We used different color flower cut outs to practice putting two groups together.

In the block Center we created gardens, parks and roof top gardens.

Dramatic Play Center was turned into a flower shop.  We made bouquets and sold them to our friends.  We also had a small vegetable garden.

We planted grass seeds, lima beans and radish seeds.

The Sand table was filled with dirt and Lima beans that had the letter written on them.  The children were encouraged to dig in the dirt to find the beans and match the letters to a separate mat.

# Water Unit

In the ABC center we worked on sounding out CVC words together.

Students used the blocks to make boats

We mixed water, paint and soap and made bubbles using straws.  Then we rested paper on the bubbles to leave the colors onto the paper.  The colored paper was perfect to make an underwater picture!

We put some paint in the freezer. When the paint was frozen we tried painting with it.  It was hard at first but as it melted it was easier to move on the paper.

# Light Unit

Pre-K spent the month of February studying LIGHT! We experimented with different light sources such as flashlights, sunlight, and glow sticks.  We used light to determine if items were translucent, transparent or opaque. Students used many different objects to cast shadows and we went outside to play with our own shadows. We learned how some animals sleep in the daytime, they are called nocturnal and we are diurnal because we sleep at night.

In the ABC center we used straight and curved lines to create letters for our names.

In the science center we used a prism to experiment with bending light.  If we held the flashlight just right we found a rainbow.  We used mirrors to reflect the light.

In the Math Center we experimented with moving moving shadows.  We learned how shadows move depending on where the light source is coming from. We also learned how a shadow gets bigger and smaller.

We went outside and watched as our shadow followed every move we made!
